A responsible use of antibiotics in animal nutrition

The Austrian company BIOMIN organized earlier this year a symposium dedicated to the responsible use of antibiotics in modern poultry production.

Since 2006 and the ban on using antibiotics in poultry nutrition in the view of making them bigger, the use of antibiotics is decreasing.

Biomin has been engaged over several years into the suppression of medicines within animal nutrition.

“Our research, especially the ones carried out for the Project Resist, are based on the prevailing and persistence of resistances and not on the efficiency of antibiotics”. With the ban on conventional cages in Europe to the preferred use of cages with a low bedding density per unit, not only animal welfare increases but it also means a reduction of the use of antibiotics at preventive use. In France, the share of eggs produced in cages in retail shops will decreased from 70% (in 2016) to 30% by 2025. In addition to improved cages, alternatives such as free-range breeding and organic breeding are booming. “However, eggs production is lower, and mortality higher, as is nutrition intake per hen” says Peter Van Horne, Researcher at the University of Wageningen. Consequently, the environment of hens in alternative breeding being more varied, it puts hens at a higher risk. To tackle this, “Hygiene, a good vaccine campaign and management of the quality of nutrients can decrease the use of antibiotics in hens breeding” says Gerrit Morren, Production Director at Verbeek Hatchery Holland.
